Mirror Mirror on the Wall,

This project is aimed to address our obsession with our appearance, specifically our face features. Lots of people turn to plastic surgery and suffer torment due to compulsions about our looks. However, you can never see your own face directly. It is always through a photo or a mirror. How much do we actually know our looks?

I conducted an experiment where I modified a picture of a celebrity and my classmate's faces to slightly change its feature. Although people notice few changes in celebrity's looks, they showed a lack of recognization for the change that was made on their own faces.

Visualization

To visualize how we are unaware of our facial features, I made a mirror-like screen that reflects people’s faces differently. I used face-tracking technology, so whenever people look into the “mirror, “ they will see the anatomy of their faces instead of their own features. I also asked them to draw their face while they are unable to see their faces in the mirror. Once the drawing is done, the date of the drawing would be sent to the computer behind the wall. Then, the illustration will become the face in the mirror instead of the anatomy, as to visualize their interpreted version of themselves.

The video shows how the face filter looks in the “mirror.“
